Local Supplier Spotlight:

7 Questions with Churchfields Saltworks

At St Peters Garden Centre, we love supporting local as much as we can. In Blake’s Farm Shop, we carefully select the products that we stock, and they come from the very best producers in Worcestershire and the West Midlands.

It’s our local suppliers that not only give us the very best quality products but also great stories to tell.

We sat down with local business Churchfields Saltworks, producers of Droitwich Salt to discuss their business, the products they sell, why they’re a great fit for St Peters Garden Centre and much more!

  1. Who are you, and what do you do?

Churchfields Saltworks produces Droitwich Salt. We pump the brine to bring back to our saltworks to gently crystallise in our tunnels. These tunnels are heated by our biomass boiler and the sun during warmer months.

  1. Where is your business located?

We’re located just outside Droitwich (less than 3 miles from the brine springs pumproom!)

  1. What kind of things do you sell?

We sell a variety of different flavoured salts - from our award-winning “Pure” salt (in grinding and sprinkling formats) to Charcoal, Coastline and Beech Smoked Salts as well as some of our customer's award-winning products that feature our salt – e.g Two Farmers Crisps, Tubby Toms Hot Sauce, 7 Soaps beauty products, #nom Salted Caramel Sauce, Wychbold Fudge and more.

  1. Do you have any fun facts/good stories about your business?

Droitwich Salt has an incredible provenance. It attracted the Romans to settle in what became Droitwich (as they paid their soldiers in Salt) and was once one of the richest towns in England because of it. It is thought to be the oldest and purest natural brine springs in the world - over 75 million years old! It received a Royal Charter in 1215 from King John as the salt was internationally recognised and traded around the world.  The industry collapsed in the early 1900s and was revitalised by the Kerton Family in 2017 when it attracted much attention and was immediately stocked in delis and farm shops across the UK including Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

Droitwich Salt is also used by a number of fantastic award-winning local businesses including The Beefy Boys, Two Farmers Crisps, #Nom Salted Caramel Sauce, Wychbold Fudge, Tubby Toms Hot Sauce, and more.
